Independence First
Every ranking, match score, and recommendation on HVACSchoolGuide.com is calculated algorithmically using publicly available data. We have affiliate relationships with some schools — if you enroll through our site, we may earn a commission — but this is disclosed upfront and never influences a school's ranking or score.
What We Track
Accreditation status, graduation rates, job placement rates, tuition costs, certification offerings, program format, and state license alignment.
What We Ignore
Marketing materials, school-submitted testimonials, advertising spend, and anything a school pays to have included. Our data comes from third-party sources.
How We Update
Key data is reviewed quarterly. BLS salary data updates annually. State license requirements are reviewed each year against official state board publications.
6-Factor Matching Score
When a student submits their preferences, each program in our database receives a weighted score across these six factors. The highest-scoring programs appear first.
01
Certification Alignment
25%
Source: EPA, NATE, HVAC Excellence
Does the program prepare students for the certifications employers actually require? We score programs on whether they include EPA 608 prep, NATE exam preparation, and hands-on lab hours meeting HVAC Excellence standards.
02
Geographic Fit
20%
Source: SEED_SCHOOLS data, BLS state data
Programs closer to the student's target market score higher. We also weight whether the school is in a high-demand metro (based on BLS regional employment data) and whether the license requirements in that state align with the program's curriculum.
03
Budget & Financial Aid
20%
Source: IPEDS, school-reported data
Total cost of attendance including tuition, fees, and tool kits. We normalize costs against median starting salary in the region to produce a return-on-investment score. Schools offering federal financial aid (Title IV) score higher.
04
Program Format
15%
Source: School catalogs
In-person, hybrid, and online programs are each suited to different students. Format matching ensures day-class-only programs are not recommended to students who need evening schedules, and vice versa.
05
Program Quality Signals
10%
Source: IPEDS, ACCET, state reports
Graduation rate, job placement rate (90-day and 1-year), and accreditor standing. We use IPEDS completion data where available and supplement with school-reported placement rates that are verified annually.
06
Experience Level Match
10%
Source: Program prerequisites
Entry-level certificate programs, journeyman upgrade courses, and associate degrees serve different experience levels. We match program prerequisites to the student's current experience to avoid recommending programs for which they are over- or under-qualified.

How We Make Money
Full transparency on our revenue model — and why it does not affect rankings.
Affiliate Disclosure
HVACSchoolGuide.com earns commissions when students click school links and subsequently enroll in a program. This is called an affiliate or lead generation relationship.

Schools cannot purchase a higher ranking. The 6-factor algorithm runs the same way regardless of whether a school has an affiliate agreement with us. In practice, some schools in our database are non-affiliate (we list them because they serve students well), and some affiliate schools rank lower than non-affiliate schools in our results.

Pages with affiliate links are marked with a disclosure banner. For complete details, see our Affiliate Disclosure page.
Methodology Questions
Common questions about how we evaluate and rank HVAC programs.
Does HVACSchoolGuide.com accept payment to rank schools higher?
No. Schools cannot pay to improve their ranking or matching score. Our algorithm is entirely data-driven based on objective criteria like graduation rate, job placement, accreditation, and cost. Schools may have affiliate relationships with us (meaning we earn a commission if a student enrolls through our site), but this never affects their ranking position or score.
How often is school data updated?
We review school data quarterly and update key metrics — tuition, enrollment status, accreditation — as soon as we are notified of changes. State licensing requirement data is reviewed annually against each state board's official publications.
Where does salary data come from?
Salary data comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) survey, specifically SOC code 49-9021 (Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Mechanics and Installers). We display state-level percentile data directly from BLS, updated annually.
How do you verify accreditation status?
We cross-reference each school against the ACCET (Accrediting Council for Continuing Education & Training), ACICS, NACCAS, and regional accreditor databases. For community colleges, we verify through AACC and their regional accreditor. We also check IPEDS enrollment data to confirm the school is actively enrolling students.
What if my school's information is wrong?
School administrators can contact us directly through our schools contact page. We will review and update information within 5 business days if documentation is provided. We prioritize accuracy and are happy to correct errors.
